Press Release

The Tibor de Nagy Gallery is pleased to present new paintings by Ben Aronson. The exhibition marks his second with the gallery.

The exhibition will comprise city and street views of New York, San Francisco, and Paris. The works are both large and small in scale and frequently painted from studies done directly in front of the subject. The works are loosely painted and capture the ever-changing light as it both conceals and articulates the forms of the streets and buildings, some falling into shadow.

The artist captures in his figures and in rushing traffic, what he has called a city’s urban current. He allows the viewer to experience what it is like walking down a busy city street, with eliding figures and vehicular traffic.

Donald Kuspit writes in the catalogue essay:

“Ben Aronson paints the urban scene, but, more to the esthetic point, his paintings are eloquently urbane: not just painterly, but suavely painterly. There’s a sophistication to his handling that matches the sophistication of his scenes… what makes them magically “click” is the light that spontaneously informs them. Aronson is a master of the varieties of constantly changing light.”

Ben Aronson received both his B.A. and M.A. degrees in painting from Boston University. He has been the recipient of four National Academy of Design awards and was recently elected a member. He has also taught graduate school seminars at Harvard University. His work has been exhibited and collected widely throughout the United States. Hi works has also been acquired by a number of museums in recent years, including the Boston Museum of Fine Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art.
