Andrew Masullo

A painter’s painter, the San Francisco based nonobjectivist Andrew Masullo lets the colors and shapes of his canvases speak for themselves. Modestly scaled picture plans provide the proofing grounds for Masullo’s vibrant unmixed oils which for an indiscernible lengths of time, from weeks to even decades, engage in a visual conversation leading through various avenues of compositional arrangements until a satisfactory conclusion is achieved. This acutely refined yet deceptively simple process of pure painting lends to the ostensible direct idiosyncratic hard-edge geometric formalism undertaken without any preconceived notion upon commencement. The colors, shapes and textures resulting are left to their own devices often on a frame that seem much larger than it measureable boundaries and cataloged with a sequential numbering system implemented since 1978. Masullo’s methodical rubric for making contrast against his painterly intuitive divining in the hope of making a good painting.

Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1957, Andrew Masullo attended Rutgers University and graduated with a BA in Studio Art.  He has had solo exhibitions at André Emmerich Gallery (1994, 1996), Joan Washburn Gallery (2000, 2002, 2004),  Feature Inc. (2010), and Mary Boone Gallery (2013) all in New York; Thomas Ammann Fine Art, Zurich (1999); Gallery Paule Anglim, San Francisco (2000, 2006, 2008, 2012); Daniel Weinberg Gallery, Los Angeles (2007, 2009, 2011); Steven Zevitas Gallery, Boston (2007, 2011, 2015) and Texas Gallery, Houston (2009, 2014).  Masullo was the recipient of a 2011 Guggenheim Foundation fellowship.  A selection of 32 paintings were on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, as part of the 2012 Whitney Biennial.
