Press Release

The Tibor de Nagy Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Ilse Murdock. The exhibition marks her first with the gallery. The exhibition will include small and medium-sized oil paintings that were completed over the last two years. The works were all painted outdoors in the landscape. Many were painted in the Palisades Park, Wave Hill, Fort Tilden, landscape locations not far from urban New York, and farther afield locales in Maine and Provincetown.

Included in the group of works presented are several that continue from Murdock’s “Palette Series,” a group of works that incorporate the pallet’s painting dabs across the bottom of the actual paintings; the private realm of the palette, the painter’s movements and gestures, and the public realm of the painted image unify on the canvas. Many of these works are painted on found stretched canvases and pieces of glass. In the artist's newer works, the palettes continue to be located within the actual painting and in some cases include other studio byproducts repurposed beneath the painted surface, which in turn take on a landscape of their own.

The artist lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. She received a Bachelor’s of Fine Art from Parsons School of Design, and a Masters of Fine Art from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, and recently attended the Skowhegan residency. The artist was featured by NY Arts Magazine in the article 30 Artists to Watch in 2012.
