Press Release

The gallery is pleased to present a series of recent paintings by Kyle Staver. It will be her first exhibition with the gallery. The paintings are figurative and large in scale and scope, with subjects often drawn from mythology and biblical images. A student of art history, the works are inspired by, and in conversation with masters from history including Titian, Rembrandt, and Picasso.

The artist uses scumbling and glazing to achieve an active painting surface, giving the paintings depth and space. The surfaces are punctuated by dabs of saturated color which play off of large swaths of darker tones underneath, imbuing the paintings with weightiness and mystery. The paintings become a visceral experience, where every area of the composition is activated.

Staver is from Minnesota and received her MFA from Yale School of Art. She has exhibited throughout the United States, and has been a recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, and the Benjamin Altman Figure Prize from the National Academy Museum, New York.
